Sri Lanka has a very high suicide rate

In 2005 around 5,964 suicides occurred in Sri Lanka, 117 more than in 2004. In 2005, on average 16 Sri Lankans committed suicide every day.

Sri Lanka reported 30.52 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 10.34 suicides per 100,000 people.

Sri Lanka has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 5,964 recorded suicide cases in 2005, 4,486 were men suicides and 1,478 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 46.61 per 100,000 men and for women 14.9 per 100,000 female. In spite of this, it is one of the countries with the highest female suicide rate in the world.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Sri Lanka suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 1,219 homicides in Sri Lanka, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 4.9 suicides.
