Sri Lanka - Intentional self-harm

In 2007 occurred 5,584 suicides in Sri Lanka. This year, 143 more people committed suicide than in 2006. In 2007, on average 15 Sri Lankans committed suicide every day.

Sri Lanka had 28.14 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 10 suicides per 100,000 people.

Sri Lanka has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 5,584 recorded suicide cases in 2007, 4,299 were men suicides and 1,285 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 44.19 per 100,000 men and for women 12.7 per 100,000 female. In spite of this, it is one of the countries with the highest female suicide rate in the world.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Sri Lanka suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 2,044 homicides in Sri Lanka, suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 2.7 suicides.
