In 2018 around 13,670 suicides occurred in South Korea, 1,207 more than in 2017. In 2018, on average 37 South Koreans committed suicide every day.
South Korea reported 26.5 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 9.42 suicides per 100,000 people.
South Korea has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.
Of the 13,670 recorded suicide cases in 2018, 9,862 were men suicides and 3,808 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 38.1 per 100,000 men and for women 14.8 per 100,000 female. In spite of this, it is one of the countries with the highest female suicide rate in the world.
Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In South Korea suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 309 homicides in South Korea, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 44.2 suicides.
