South Africa has a low suicide rate

In 2016 occurred 431 suicides in South Africa. This year, 51 fewer people committed suicide than in 2015. In South Africa, on average, at least one suicide happens every day.

South Africa had 0.8 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 9.41 self-harm per 100.000 people.

South Africa has a low suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 431 recorded suicide cases in 2016, 353 were men suicides and 78 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 1.3 per 100,000 men and for women 0.3 per 100,000 female.

Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in South Africa. However, in South Africa in 2016 there were there were 19,016 homicides, many more than suicides. There were 44.1 homicides per suicide.
