In 2005 around 461 suicides occurred in South Africa, 74 more than in 2004. In South Africa, on average, at least one suicide happens every year.

Of the 461 recorded suicide cases in 2005, 360 were men suicides and 101 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 1.6 per 100,000 men and for women 0.4 per 100,000 female.

Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in South Africa. However, in South Africa in 2005 there were there were 18,528 homicides, many more than suicides. There were 40.2 homicides per suicide.
