Number of suicides increases in Ireland

In 2016 around 437 suicides occurred in Ireland, 12 more than in 2015. In Ireland, on average, at least one suicide happens every year.

Ireland reported 9.15 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, less than the average suicide in the world, of 9.41 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 437 recorded suicide cases in 2016, 350 were men suicides and 87 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 14.79 per 100,000 men and for women 3.62 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Ireland suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 34 homicides in Ireland, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 12.9 suicides.
