Suriname has a very high suicide rate

In 2005 around 138 suicides occurred in Suriname, 1 more than in 2004.

Suriname reported 27.7 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 10.34 suicides per 100,000 people.

Suriname has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 138 recorded suicide cases in 2005, 113 were men suicides and 25 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 43.39 per 100,000 men and for women 9.86 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Suriname suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 69 homicides in Suriname, suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 2 suicides.
