Suriname has a very high suicide rate

In 2004 occurred 137 suicides in Suriname. This year, 3 more people committed suicide than in 2003.

Suriname had 27.73 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 10.53 suicides per 100,000 people.

Suriname has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 137 recorded suicide cases in 2004, 113 were men suicides and 24 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 43.75 per 100,000 men and for women 9.46 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Suriname suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 46 homicides in Suriname, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 3 suicides.
