South Africa has a low suicide rate

In 2007 occurred 420 suicides in South Africa. This year, 94 fewer people committed suicide than in 2006. In South Africa, on average, at least one suicide happens every day.

South Africa had 0.9 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 10 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 420 recorded suicide cases in 2007, 316 were men suicides and 104 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 1.3 per 100,000 men and for women 0.4 per 100,000 female.

Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in South Africa. However, in South Africa in 2007 there were there were 18,400 homicides, many more than suicides. There were 43.8 homicides per suicide.
