Number of suicides falls in Portugal

In 2005 occurred 914 suicides in Portugal. This year, 292 fewer people committed suicide than in 2004. On average, there are 3 suicides per day.

Portugal had 8.7 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, less than the average suicide in the world, of 10.34 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 914 recorded suicide cases in 2005, 696 were men suicides and 218 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 13.8 per 100,000 men and for women 4 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Portugal suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 135 homicides in Portugal, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 6.8 suicides.
