Suicides grow in Portugal

By 2023, suicides in Portugal increased by 17 people to at 1,046 suicides On average, there are 3 suicides per day.

In Portugal there were 9.8 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, above the world average of 9.12 suicides per 100,000 people.

Of the 1,046 recorded suicide cases in 2023, 838 were men suicides and 208 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 16.45 per 100,000 men and for women 3.73 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Portugal suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 75 homicides in Portugal, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 13.9 suicides.
