Number of suicides increases in Portugal

In 2022 around 1,029 suicides occurred in Portugal, 95 more than in 2021. On average, there are 3 suicides per day.

Portugal reported 9.7 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, above the world average of 9.13 suicides per 100,000 people.

Of the 1,029 recorded suicide cases in 2022, 785 were men suicides and 244 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 15.5 per 100,000 men and for women 4.42 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Portugal suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 75 homicides in Portugal, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 13.7 suicides.
