In Portugal there were 11.5 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, above the world average of 10.53 suicides per 100,000 people.
Of the 1,206 recorded suicide cases in 2004, 909 were men suicides and 297 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 18 per 100,000 men and for women 5.5 per 100,000 female.
Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Portugal suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 144 homicides in Portugal, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 8.4 suicides.
