Suicides increase in Malawi

In 2007 occurred 710 suicides in Malawi. This year, 7 more people committed suicide than in 2006. In Malawi, on average, at least one suicide happens every day.

Malawi had 4.92 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 10 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 710 recorded suicide cases in 2007, 567 were men suicides and 143 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 8.69 per 100,000 men and for women 2.05 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Malawi suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 690 homicides in Malawi, there are more suicides than homicides. For every homicide there were 1 suicides.
