In 2016 around 365 suicides occurred in Latvia, 23 less than in 2015. In Latvia, on average, at least one suicide happens every year.
Latvia reported 18.83 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 9.41 suicides per 100,000 people.
Latvia has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.
Of the 365 recorded suicide cases in 2016, 288 were men suicides and 77 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 32.44 per 100,000 men and for women 7.27 per 100,000 female.
Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Latvia suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 69 homicides in Latvia, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 5.3 suicides.
