Number of suicides increases in Latvia

In 2023 around 267 suicides occurred in Latvia, 41 more than in 2022.

Latvia reported 14.2 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 9.13 suicides per 100,000 people.

Latvia is a country with a high rate of suicide.

Of the 267 recorded suicide cases in 2023, 225 were men suicides and 42 were women. Men have a very high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 25.7 per 100,000 men and for women 4.2 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Latvia suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 47 homicides in Latvia, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 5.7 suicides.
