Number of suicides unchanged in Guyana

In 2005 occurred 178 suicides in Guyana, the same people committed suicide than in 2004.

Guyana had 23.97 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 10.34 suicides per 100,000 people.

Guyana has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 178 recorded suicide cases in 2005, 132 were men suicides and 46 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 34.8 per 100,000 men and for women 12.07 per 100,000 female. In spite of this, it is one of the countries with the highest female suicide rate in the world.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Guyana suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 142 homicides in Guyana, there are more suicides than homicides. For every homicide there were 1.3 suicides.
