Suicides increase in Costa Rica

In 2018 occurred 391 suicides in Costa Rica. This year, 110 more people committed suicide than in 2017. In Costa Rica, on average, at least one suicide happens every day.

Costa Rica had 7.8 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, less than the average suicide in the world, of 9.42 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 391 recorded suicide cases in 2018, 314 were men suicides and 77 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 12.4 per 100,000 men and for women 3.1 per 100,000 female.

Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in Costa Rica. However, in Costa Rica in 2018 there were there were 585 homicides, then, homicides are more common than suicides. There were 1.5 homicides per suicide.
