Suicides increase in Costa Rica

In 2022 occurred 450 suicides in Costa Rica. This year, 68 more people committed suicide than in 2021. In Costa Rica, on average, at least one suicide happens every day.

Costa Rica had 8.7 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, less than the average suicide in the world, of 9.15 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 450 recorded suicide cases in 2022, 363 were men suicides and 87 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 14.1 per 100,000 men and for women 3.4 per 100,000 female.

Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in Costa Rica. However, in Costa Rica in 2022 there were there were 656 homicides, then, homicides are more common than suicides. There were 1.5 homicides per suicide.
