In 2016 around 336 suicides occurred in Costa Rica, 24 more than in 2015.
Costa Rica reported 6.9 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, less than the average suicide in the world, of 9.41 self-harm per 100.000 people.
Of the 336 recorded suicide cases in 2016, 284 were men suicides and 52 were women. Men have a very high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 11.5 per 100,000 men and for women 2.1 per 100,000 female.
Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in Costa Rica. However, in Costa Rica in 2016 there were there were 578 homicides, then, homicides are more common than suicides. There were 1.7 homicides per suicide.
