Suicides increase in Papua New Guinea

In 2005 occurred 555 suicides in Papua New Guinea. This year, 32 more people committed suicide than in 2004. In Papua New Guinea, on average, at least one suicide happens every day.

Papua New Guinea had 9.59 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, less than the average suicide in the world, of 10.34 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 555 recorded suicide cases in 2005, 423 were men suicides and 132 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 12.47 per 100,000 men and for women 4.25 per 100,000 female.

Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in Papua New Guinea. However, in Papua New Guinea in 2005 there were there were 603 homicides, then, homicides are more common than suicides. There were 1.1 homicides per suicide.
