Number of suicides falls in Panama

In 2007 occurred 242 suicides in Panama. This year, 15 fewer people committed suicide than in 2006.

Panama had 6.96 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, less than the average suicide in the world, of 10 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 242 recorded suicide cases in 2007, 214 were men suicides and 28 were women. Men have a very high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 12.44 per 100,000 men and for women 1.62 per 100,000 female.

Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in Panama. However, in Panama in 2007 there were there were 279 homicides, then, homicides are more common than suicides. There were 1.2 homicides per suicide.
