In 2007 around 454 suicides occurred in Latvia, 33 less than in 2006. In Latvia, on average, at least one suicide happens every year.
Latvia reported 20.6 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 10 suicides per 100,000 people.
Latvia has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.
Of the 454 recorded suicide cases in 2007, 359 were men suicides and 95 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 35.5 per 100,000 men and for women 8 per 100,000 female.
Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Latvia suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 94 homicides in Latvia, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 4.8 suicides.
