In 2007 around 270 suicides occurred in Costa Rica, 80 less than in 2006.
Costa Rica reported 6.2 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 10 self-harm per 100.000 people.
Of the 270 recorded suicide cases in 2007, 226 were men suicides and 44 were women. Men have a very high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 10.3 per 100,000 men and for women 2.1 per 100,000 female.
Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in Costa Rica. However, in Costa Rica in 2007 there were there were 369 homicides, then, homicides are more common than suicides. There were 1.4 homicides per suicide.
