In 2005 around 8,547 suicides occurred in Brazil, 533 more than in 2004. In 2005, on average 23 Brazilians committed suicide every day.

Brazil reported 4.6 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 10.34 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 8,547 recorded suicide cases in 2005, 6,742 were men suicides and 1,805 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 7.4 per 100,000 men and for women 1.9 per 100,000 female.

Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in Brazil. However, in Brazil in 2005 there were there were 47,593 homicides, many more than suicides. There were 5.6 homicides per suicide.
