In December, vehicle registrations in United States grew by 11.8% with respect to December of 1996. In total, 1,287,700 cars were registered and 15,498,100 new cars were sold in the last twelve months, 0.27% more than the year before.
The breakdown of car sales figures for the month of December is:
- Commercial vehicles sold: 635,400, 15.07% more than in December of 1996.
- Passenger cars regitrations: 652,300, which represents a figure of 8.79% more than in December of 1996.

With annual sales of 56.84 cars per 1,000 residents, 4.72 of them in the last month, United States, occupies second place, so, compared to the other countries in the ranking, its population has a good standard of living.
As can be seen, the number of registrations per thousand residents has fallen in the last year. A drop in registrations generally indicates a fall in consumer confidence and, when it is sustained, a recession in the real economy.
