Number of suicides increases in Guatemala

In 2005 around 467 suicides occurred in Guatemala, 6 more than in 2004. In Guatemala, on average, at least one suicide happens every year.

Guatemala reported 3.56 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 10.34 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 467 recorded suicide cases in 2005, 350 were men suicides and 117 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 5.44 per 100,000 men and for women 1.8 per 100,000 female.

Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in Guatemala. However, in Guatemala in 2005 there were there were 5,338 homicides, many more than suicides. There were 11.4 homicides per suicide.
