Suicides increase in Guatemala

In 2007 occurred 627 suicides in Guatemala. This year, 25 more people committed suicide than in 2006. In Guatemala, on average, at least one suicide happens every day.

Guatemala had 4.58 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 10 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 627 recorded suicide cases in 2007, 498 were men suicides and 130 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 7.44 per 100,000 men and for women 1.91 per 100,000 female.

Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in Guatemala. However, in Guatemala in 2007 there were there were 5,781 homicides, many more than suicides. There were 9.2 homicides per suicide.
