Sri Lanka has a very high suicide rate

In 2001 around 6,344 suicides occurred in Sri Lanka, 494 less than in 2000. In 2001, on average 17 Sri Lankans committed suicide every day.

Sri Lanka reported 33.55 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 10.88 suicides per 100,000 people.

Sri Lanka has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 6,344 recorded suicide cases in 2001, 4,788 were men suicides and 1,556 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 50.96 per 100,000 men and for women 16.35 per 100,000 female. In spite of this, it is one of the countries with the highest female suicide rate in the world.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Sri Lanka suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 1,919 homicides in Sri Lanka, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 3.3 suicides.
