Suicides decreased in Malawi

In 2001 around 719 suicides occurred in Malawi, 24 less than in 2000. In Malawi, on average, at least one suicide happens every year.

Malawi reported 5.82 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 10.88 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 719 recorded suicide cases in 2001, 579 were men suicides and 140 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 10.37 per 100,000 men and for women 2.36 per 100,000 female.

Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in Malawi. However, in Malawi in 2001 there were there were 900 homicides, then, homicides are more common than suicides. There were 1.3 homicides per suicide.
