Number of suicides increases in Panama

In 2001 around 224 suicides occurred in Panama, 28 more than in 2000.

Panama reported 7.21 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 10.88 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 224 recorded suicide cases in 2001, 195 were men suicides and 29 were women. Men have a very high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 12.68 per 100,000 men and for women 1.87 per 100,000 female.

Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in Panama. However, in Panama in 2001 there were there were 306 homicides, then, homicides are more common than suicides. There were 1.4 homicides per suicide.
