Suicides increase in Guyana

In 2001 occurred 190 suicides in Guyana. This year, 24 more people committed suicide than in 2000.

Guyana had 25.62 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 10.88 suicides per 100,000 people.

Guyana has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 190 recorded suicide cases in 2001, 148 were men suicides and 42 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 39.03 per 100,000 men and for women 11.13 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Guyana suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 80 homicides in Guyana, suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 2.4 suicides.
