Suicides increase in Ecuador

In 2001 occurred 861 suicides in Ecuador. This year, 48 more people committed suicide than in 2000. On average, there are 2 suicides per day.

Ecuador had 6.72 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 10.88 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 861 recorded suicide cases in 2001, 596 were men suicides and 265 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 9.27 per 100,000 men and for women 4.14 per 100,000 female.

Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in Ecuador. However, in Ecuador in 2001 there were there were 1,658 homicides, and therefore, number of deaths by murder is far greater than people to take their own lives. There were 1.9 homicides per suicide.
