Number of suicides increases in Turkmenistan

In 2001 around 409 suicides occurred in Turkmenistan, 23 more than in 2000. In Turkmenistan, on average, at least one suicide happens every year.

Turkmenistan reported 8.94 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, less than the average suicide in the world, of 10.88 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 409 recorded suicide cases in 2001, 327 were men suicides and 82 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 14.32 per 100,000 men and for women 3.5 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Turkmenistan suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 248 homicides in Turkmenistan, there are more suicides than homicides. For every homicide there were 1.6 suicides.
