Number of suicides increases in Guatemala

In 2001 around 446 suicides occurred in Guatemala, 21 more than in 2000. In Guatemala, on average, at least one suicide happens every year.

Guatemala reported 3.74 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 10.88 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 446 recorded suicide cases in 2001, 330 were men suicides and 116 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 5.59 per 100,000 men and for women 1.95 per 100,000 female.

Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in Guatemala. However, in Guatemala in 2001 there were there were 3,230 homicides, many more than suicides. There were 7.2 homicides per suicide.
