Mortality rate - Mortality

Mortality Rate is defined as the proportion of deaths occurring in a given area (country, community, province, municipality, etc) with respect to its total population over a year. It is usually expressed in per thousand (‰).

Beyond the result of the percentage, it is important to compare the mortality rate of an area with that of the rest, as well as the differences that occur according to the sex, age of its inhabitants or other types of conditioning factors.

To calculate the mortality rate we have to divide the number of deaths in a period by the average population in that period and multiply the result by 1,000.

To calculate the mortality rate we only have to apply the following formula:

In general an area is considered to have a high mortality rate if it is above 30 ‰. A moderate mortality rate is between 15 and 30 ‰ and a low rate is below 15 ‰.

There is an inverse correlation between life expectancy at birth and mortality rate, since the higher the life expectancy at birth in a given population, the lower its mortality rate.

In addition to the mortality rate by sex and age, the mortality rate related to different diseases or situations is also studied.
