In 1972 around 1,745 suicides occurred in Austria, 51 more than in 1971. In 1972, on average 5 Austrians committed suicide every day.

Austria reported 23.1 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 11.98 suicides per 100,000 people.

Austria has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 1,745 recorded suicide cases in 1972, 1,170 were men suicides and 575 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 32.8 per 100,000 men and for women 14.4 per 100,000 female. In spite of this, it is one of the countries with the highest female suicide rate in the world.
