Suriname has a very high suicide rate

In 2013 occurred 139 suicides in Suriname. This year, 7 more people committed suicide than in 2012.

Suriname had 25.22 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 9.78 suicides per 100,000 people.

Suriname has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 139 recorded suicide cases in 2013, 105 were men suicides and 33 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 37.27 per 100,000 men and for women 11.87 per 100,000 female. In spite of this, it is one of the countries with the highest female suicide rate in the world.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Suriname suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 29 homicides in Suriname, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 4.8 suicides.
