Suicides increase in Malawi

In 2013 occurred 864 suicides in Malawi. This year, 35 more people committed suicide than in 2012. On average, there are 2 suicides per day.

Malawi had 5.05 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 9.78 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 864 recorded suicide cases in 2013, 667 were men suicides and 197 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 8.59 per 100,000 men and for women 2.38 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Malawi suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 279 homicides in Malawi, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 3.1 suicides.
