Japan has a very high suicide rate

In 1973 occurred 18,859 suicides in Japan. This year, 844 more people committed suicide than in 1972. In 1973, on average 52 Japanese committed suicide every day.

Japan had 17.3 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, above the world average of 11.95 suicides per 100,000 people.

Japan, has a relatively low rate of suicide per inhabitants.

Of the 18,859 recorded suicide cases in 1973, 10,730 were men suicides and 8,129 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 20 per 100,000 men and for women 14.6 per 100,000 female. In spite of this, it is one of the countries with the highest female suicide rate in the world.
