In 2020 occurred 20,243 suicides in Japan. This year, 818 more people committed suicide than in 2019. In 2020, on average 55 Japanese committed suicide every day.

Japan had 16 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 9.27 suicides per 100,000 people.

Japan is a country with a high rate of suicide.

Of the 20,243 recorded suicide cases in 2020, 13,588 were men suicides and 6,655 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 22.1 per 100,000 men and for women 10.3 per 100,000 female. In spite of this, it is one of the countries with the highest female suicide rate in the world.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Japan suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 318 homicides in Japan, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 63.7 suicides.
