Suicides increase in Greece

In 2021 occurred 467 suicides in Greece. This year, 3 more people committed suicide than in 2020. In Greece, on average, at least one suicide happens every day.

Greece had 4.4 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 9.18 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 467 recorded suicide cases in 2021, 389 were men suicides and 78 were women. Men have a very high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 7.53 per 100,000 men and for women 1.42 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Greece suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 89 homicides in Greece, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 5.2 suicides.
