Number of suicides falls in Dominican Republic

In 2013 occurred 686 suicides in Dominican Republic. This year, 209 fewer people committed suicide than in 2012. In Dominican Republic, on average, at least one suicide happens every day.

Dominican Republic had 7.01 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, less than the average suicide in the world, of 9.78 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 686 recorded suicide cases in 2013, 560 were men suicides and 127 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 10.92 per 100,000 men and for women 2.52 per 100,000 female.

Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in Dominican Republic. However, in Dominican Republic in 2013 there were there were 1,978 homicides, and therefore, number of deaths by murder is far greater than people to take their own lives. There were 2.9 homicides per suicide.
