Sri Lanka has a very high suicide rate

By 2003, suicides in Sri Lanka increased by 101 people to at 5,952 suicides In 2003, on average 16 Sri Lankans committed suicide every day.

In Sri Lanka there were 30.96 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 10.69 suicides per 100,000 people.

Sri Lanka has a very high suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 5,952 recorded suicide cases in 2003, 4,462 were men suicides and 1,490 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 46.93 per 100,000 men and for women 15.34 per 100,000 female. In spite of this, it is one of the countries with the highest female suicide rate in the world.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Sri Lanka suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 1,310 homicides in Sri Lanka, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 4.5 suicides.
