Number of suicides increases in Malawi

In 2014 around 907 suicides occurred in Malawi, 43 more than in 2013. On average, there are 2 suicides per day.

Malawi reported 5.15 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 9.71 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 907 recorded suicide cases in 2014, 700 were men suicides and 207 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 8.76 per 100,000 men and for women 2.44 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Malawi suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 279 homicides in Malawi, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 3.3 suicides.
