Suicides decreased in Syria

In 2013 around 507 suicides occurred in Syria, 20 less than in 2012. In Syria, on average, at least one suicide happens every year.

Syria reported 2.36 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 9.78 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Syria has a low suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 507 recorded suicide cases in 2013, 411 were men suicides and 96 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 3.8 per 100,000 men and for women 0.9 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Syria suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 463 homicides in Syria, there are more suicides than homicides. For every homicide there were 1.1 suicides.
