South Africa has a low suicide rate

In 2002 around 237 suicides occurred in South Africa, 148 less than in 2001.

South Africa reported 0.5 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 10.78 self-harm per 100.000 people.

South Africa has a low suicide rate compared to other countries.

Of the 237 recorded suicide cases in 2002, 190 were men suicides and 47 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 0.9 per 100,000 men and for women 0.2 per 100,000 female.

Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in South Africa. However, in South Africa in 2002 there were there were 21,553 homicides, many more than suicides. There were 90.9 homicides per suicide.
