In 2000 around 3,475 suicides occurred in Mexico, 136 more than in 1999. In 2000, on average 10 Mexicans committed suicide every day.
Mexico reported 3.5 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 10.98 self-harm per 100.000 people.
Of the 3,475 recorded suicide cases in 2000, 2,937 were men suicides and 538 were women. Men have a very high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 6.1 per 100,000 men and for women 1.1 per 100,000 female.
Suicide is a very important cause of death in the world and also in Mexico. However, in Mexico in 2000 there were there were 10,737 homicides, many more than suicides. There were 3.1 homicides per suicide.
