Suicides grow in Malawi

By 2003, suicides in Malawi increased by 8 people to at 715 suicides In Malawi, on average, at least one suicide happens every day.

In Malawi there were 5.46 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 10.69 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 715 recorded suicide cases in 2003, 580 were men suicides and 134 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 9.9 per 100,000 men and for women 2.16 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Malawi suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 300 homicides in Malawi, suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 2.4 suicides.
