Suicides decreased in Malawi

In 2002 around 707 suicides occurred in Malawi, 12 less than in 2001. In Malawi, on average, at least one suicide happens every year.

Malawi reported 5.52 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, much less than the average suicide in the world, of 10.78 self-harm per 100.000 people.

Of the 707 recorded suicide cases in 2002, 570 were men suicides and 137 were women. Men have a high rate of death by suicide compared with women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 9.96 per 100,000 men and for women 2.26 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Malawi suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 567 homicides in Malawi, there are more suicides than homicides. For every homicide there were 1.2 suicides.
