In 2017 occurred 20,465 suicides in Japan. This year, 552 fewer people committed suicide than in 2016. In 2017, on average 56 Japanese committed suicide every day.

Japan had 16.2 suicides per 100,000 inhabitants, well above the world average of 9.42 suicides per 100,000 people.

Japan is a country with a high rate of suicide.

Of the 20,465 recorded suicide cases in 2017, 14,333 were men suicides and 6,132 were women. So that, the suicide rate among males were 23.2 per 100,000 men and for women 9.4 per 100,000 female.

Statistics show that in 2014, suicides were the main cause of unnatural death in the world. In Japan suicide also is one of the leading causes of unnatural death. By comparison, there were 306 homicides in Japan, the number of suicides far outnumber homicides. For every homicide there were 66.9 suicides.
